What is Powder Coating

WHAT MAKES POWDER COATING THE BEST CHOICE?

Powder coating looks like paint but acts like armor. It’s tough, attractive, cost-effective and easy on the environment. Powder coated products have a superior reputation for performance and durability over paint.

SANDBLASTING & CLEANING PROCESS: A quality finish starts with proper surface preparation.  This normally entails the removal of grease, oil, dirt and other materials via chemical, physical or mechanical methods to clean the surface and promote coating adhesion. We have an in-house sandblasting room at our facility.  We also work with a burn-off facility should your item require the removal of an existing coating.  We hand clean all items to ensure proper adhesion. Our pre-treatment process has been proven successful on steel, aluminum and galvanized substrates. Products pass through our oven prior to the application of powder to "bake-off" any oils or grease that may still be on or inside the part.

SURFACE PREPARATION: High temperature masking tape can be applied to designated surfaces to keep them from being coated. Silicon plugs and caps are used for threaded holes or shafts to protect them. The oven temperature makes the use of plastic and resin body fillers hard to use. Often the powder will not bind to a filler's surface, leaving it exposed.

POWDER COATING: The powder coat process is the application of electrostatically charged particles sprayed onto the surface of a substrate. With our system, a feeder delivers the powder to an electrostatic gun. The gun emits the powder in the form of a diffused cloud of powder with an electrical charge, allowing the charged particles seek out and adhere to the surface of an item.  Think of static electricity, similar to dust on a TV screen.  This process holds the powder particles in place until it is placed in the oven.  After the application of the coating, the next step involves baking the workpiece in a specially designed oven.  Curing is performed at 400 F for approximately 20 minutes and then removed to cool down and harden.

LARGE PARTS CAPABILITY: Our facility can handle parts up to 23’ long. Forklift service available.

ENVIRONMENTAL: Powder coating has numerous benefits, including durability, longevity and protection, but one of its greatest advantages over other finishing processes is its environmental and health safety.  Unlike other solvent-based paint, powder coating doesn’t generate harmful fumes or pollutants. It also has less waste in the overall process, including lower emissions and less product waste.  While industrial paint has a high concentration of VOCs, powder coating is inert and contains negligible amounts of VOCs, thus carrying no risk of air pollution or adverse health effects.
